EXPLORING CANNAREGIO - THE VENETIANS' VENICE

Cannaregio, one of the six   "sestieri" (or neighbourhoods), is a rather unspoilt part of town, still to be discovered by mass tourism, mostly inhabited by genuine Venetians, unlike other areas of Venice. Past the colorful open air market we'll explore the Jewish Ghetto, with its tall, tower-like buildings, its spacious and lively 'piazza', called Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, the five lavishly decorated Baroque-Rococo Synagogues (one for each different "nation": German, French Ashkenazi, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, and finally "Levantine", as to say, Greek and Turkish).
We'll walk down along the wide, silent and luminous canals, through Campo dei Mori with its wierd statues of Moorish merchant, to the Gothic church of la Madonna dell'Orto, that hosts some powerful huge canvases by Tintoretto, in particular The Final Judgement and the Adoration of the Golden Calf (the great painter is  actually buried there).
Walking along the Fondamenta Contarini we'll stop to take pictures of the famous "Palace of the Camel", then - at the extreme northern point of town - a marvellous,  melancholy view over the lagoon, with the cemetery island of San Michele and Murano, will open in front of us.
