THE UFFIZI & ACCADEMIA TOUR

Our tour begins with a visit to the Accademia museum to view some of Michelangelo’s key works. We will admire the Prisoners, the sculptures created for the monument to Pope Julius II, and the touching Pietà (his second). We also discuss his unfinished works, the so-called “non-finito.” Our attention will then turn to Michelangelo’s David, masterpiece and symbol of the Florentine Renaissance, completed in 1504 when he was only 29 years old. (No standing in line, we make the reservations for you!)

We continue to the Uffizi Gallery, which houses the most important collection of Renaissance paintings in the world.
The Uffizi Palace was built in 1560 during the rule of Grand Duke Cosimo I. It was the administrative centre of the state, housing the leading “magistrature,” the governors of the city. The palace was designed by Giorgio Vasari, the Grand Duke’s favourite painter and architect. It is considered his architectural masterpiece, a u-shaped building made of “pietra serena” (a type of grey sandstone), that contrasts beautifully with the white stucco plaster.
In 1565, when the building was near completion, and Cosimo had transfered the Medici family residence to the Pitti Palace, Vasari was asked to construct a private, elevated passageway, connecting the Uffizi to the Pitti Palace - what we now call the Vasari Corridor. The corridor was a safe, convenient way for Cosimo and his family to get from the Government Palace to their new residence independently. We will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Corridor from the windows of the Gallery.

The Uffizi tour focuses on the most important Renaissance masters: Giotto, the painter who paved the way for the Renaissance; Filippo Lippi, the friar-painter much admired by Cosimo the Elder; Botticelli, whose sense of harmony and symbolism is evident in his two most famous paintings: the “the Birth of Venus” and “Spring.”
You will also view masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and the Venetian painter Titian.
The goal of our Uffizi guided tour is not to rush through the Gallery, but instead to observe selected works in depth, using the Gallery as a visual guide to the history and evolution of Florentine art.
