Florence for Beginners and David tour
We start our visit with the Cathedral, normally referred to as the Duomo, the third largest church in the world, impressive for its rich three colours marble decoration: our discussion will focus on the most important architectural part of the Cathedral, the dome designed by Brunelleschi, the building that has come to represent Florence itself.
Your guided tour will then continue with the Baptistry, one of the most ancient religious buildings in town: the beauty of the Baptistry gilded doors, brought Michelangelo to define those doors as "the Gates of Paradise".
Your walk now moves on to Piazza Signoria, political heart of the city, with its ancient buildings and famous statues. The Signoria Palace has monumental apartments finely frescoed and still today is our city hall.
Our tour of Florence will bring us to discover the medieval streets in order to reach the oldest bridge in town, Ponte Vecchio, built in 1345, the only one that survived the mines of the Germans during the last war. The bridge today is famous for its jewellers and for the medieval atmosphere of its little shops.
Then we will visit the Church of Santa Croce, second largest Franciscan church after Assisi, home of artworks by artists such as Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Vasari and Canova. Our visit will focus also on the tombs of great people of the past like Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Machiavelli and Rossini.
The city tour of Florence ends in the the Academy Museum to admire some of the masterpieces by Michelangelo. We will see the Prisoners, the sculptures made for the monument of Pope Julius II. We will admire the touching second "Pietà" by Michelangelo and we will discuss about his unfinished works, the so called "non-finito". Finally our attention will be given to David, masterpiece and symbol of the Florentine Renaissance. Michelangelo finished his David in 1504 when he was only 29 years old
